Catherine's Traditional Yuletide Carol Concert Spotlights Unsung Heroes
The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The large audience will enjoy a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like award-winning actors.
Centred Around Compassion and Love
The theme of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
Attending the event are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.
A Steady Comeback
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to official duties subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she talked about recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".
Musical Talent and Access
Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the former royal to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been supported by the trust, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at the concert.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.
A Family Affair
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Among the guests will be people from various age groups.
That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, recipient of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for local food charities.
Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment
The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the perfect culmination."
This annual carol service will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
