Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
