The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
